International Homeless Animals’ Day

candleToday, the 19th Annual International Homeless Animals’ Day, honors animals who have lost their lives to due to overpopulation.

The International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) chose the third Saturday of each August to raise awareness about spay/neuter programs. Altering animals saves lives by preventing the birth of homeless animals from the start. We can and should commit to lowering shelter populations when over 4.5 million dogs and cats die each year due to lack of space.

There are many ways to help:

  • Spread the word about responsible pet ownership
  • Attend fundraisers for spay/neuter programs
  • Adopt, don’t shop – you’ll save two pets: the one you take home and the one that enters the shelter
  • Choose a pet that matches your lifestyle so a return is not likely
  • Start planning an adopt-a-thon, microchip clinic, blessing of the animals, slideshow, rally, dog walk, open house, award ceremony, live music, raffle, and/or games for next year! Contact ISAR to learn how.

What you can do right now:

By coming together on International Homeless Animals’ Day you can support ISAR in letting the world know we will not tolerate the senseless killing that continues to take the lives of innocent dogs, cats, puppies and kittens simply because there are not enough good homes for them.

Enjoy your weekend. I’m off to support my local rescue organization. You?
