World Animal Awareness Society – News
World Animal Awareness – it’s not just about animals. It’s about people too. These are some of the stories highlighted on Facebook this week by World Animal Awareness Society – WA2S.Org, a dedicated non profit focused on filming human animal intersections worldwide.
ETHIOPIA

The human/animal connection is readily apparent on a most basic level in a video called Women Want Change. This video comes from The Brook, an international charity relieving the suffering of horses & donkeys working for some of the world’s poorest communities. (Visit The Brook on Facebook.)
Women can play a powerful role in bringing about change and, through its training, The Brooke is equipping women in many rural communities with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to make improvements for the future wellbeing of their animals and their families. – The Brooke President, HRH the Duchess of Cornwall
Watch the shift toward better animal husbandry as illiterate women are educated about proper working animal nutrition, wound care and problems with overloading. They speak of a time when they didn’t know more than to use traditional – yet lacking – healing methods as compared with now healthy animals who benefit the survival of their families.

Tell Petland USA – AGAIN – STOP Selling Mill Pets!
Mary Haight, author of the Dancing Dog Blog launched the campaign on Change.org calling on Petland USA to stop selling pets. Today she asks us to drive the point home. According to Mary:
Stocking more than 150 stores across the US with puppies of all breeds is a model responsible for causing pain, suffering and death. Breeding females are locked in cages until they can no longer breed, around 5 years, and are then killed. Even if a change from the top in a franchise-structured company affects only corporate stores, the intent to do no harm is a clarion call that every company should want to take up, especially one that deals directly with living things.
Sadly, Petland is not interested.
After more than 45,000 people joined my campaign on Change.org calling on Petland USA to stop supporting puppy mills, I sent questions to the company’s headquarters, and the answers received do not recognize the pain and suffering factory farming of family pets inflicts.
Sometimes pictures can be more effective than words. Since they have the power to help stop this, remind Petland USA what breeder puppy mill dogs look like. Estimates report there are more than a million of them trapped in hopeless lives.
We need your help NOW with this simple action. It should only take 10 minutes of your time:
Petland and Puppy Mills: Stop the Madness #btc4a
Puppy Mill. The term gets bandied about so often, I wonder, does the meaning get lost? Could you define one? Could you identify a dog who came from one? And did you know there are kitten mills too?
Puppy mills are large breeding facilities where dogs live in deplorable conditions, often without necessary food, water, or veterinary care. Melanie Kahn of the Humane Society of the United States says in the video below, “It’s a horribly sad experience.” These dogs often stand on wire mesh their whole lives, eat and drink from contaminated bowls, stand in their own feces, suffer from various injuries and infections, and they fear most everything.
Poaching Crisis: Kenyans Walk in Solidarity with Animals
I have to share what just came in to Village Volunteers, the international humanitarian aid organization I work for. We don’t often get to work in animal welfare so this news is an extra special treat!
As we celebrate World Animal Day today, Africa Network for Animal Welfare together with Animal Welfare Action Kenya partners participated in a 7km walk in Nairobi. The walk attracted over 500 participants.

Celebrate National Holistic Pet Day!
WHAT’S NATIONAL HOLISTIC PET DAY?
Did you know that today, Tuesday, August 30th, is National Holistic Pet Day?
Say what? No really. And if you didn’t know that, you’re not alone. 90% of the more than 700 pet owners Halo, Purely for Pets natural pet food surveyed hadn’t either! And Halo wants to change that.
National Holistic Pet Day was founded by Colleen Paige of the Animal Miracle Foundation and Network to “celebrate and promote all the things we do (or should do) to take care of our pets’ bodies, minds and souls.” Today is also the perfect time to think about how we live within the context of our broader pet community. Halo plans to help Colleen lead the charge in raising awareness on this important day and throughout the year. And we’re completely on board!
Pitties in Frog Pose Calender: Submit Your Pin-up Pup!
Have an awesome picture of your pitbull in “frog pose?” Submit it and your dog could be a calendar pin-up pup just like Wilbur, the island-hopping Pittie (note the photo), from Two Pitties in the City!
ABOUT THE PITTIES IN FROG POSE CALENDAR
Sales of the 2012 Pitties in Frog Pose Calendar, a project conceived by The Road Dogs, will benefit organizations that help pitbulls. Eligible organizations offer rescue, adoption, fostering, medical care, training, and/or education for the many dogs who fit the vague term “pit bill.” One such organization is BAD RAP. BAD RAP’s Founders, Donna Reynolds and Tim Racer, are responsible for the evaluation and rescue of Michael Vick’s dogs, among many others, and a huge component of their rescue work involves educating the public.
“Dear Dog, I Love You” Stars Paul Newman, Helps Rescue
“Dear Dog, I Love You” is a short, romantic comedy about a guy who thinks his dog can talk, and it stars a very special rescued dog named Paul Newman. It’s hard to believe this gorgeous, talented white Basset Hound with such stunning, ice-blue eyes was found tied up and starved in an abandoned garage just a few years ago.
What sounds like the makings of a Halloween horror film has since become the role treasured pet for Paul Newman, both on the silver screen and in real life. He was rescued by Suzanne Fitch of Mid-Atlantic Basset Hound Rescue, where he was matched with his trainer and caretaker, Karen Wells. He is now a therapy dog, has shot a commercial for Google and other projects, and, in the spirit of giving back, half of Newman’s earnings are shared with Basset Rescue. You can learn more about Paul Newman’s adventurous life behind the scenes at WhiteBassetHound.com.
UPDATE: New video of Paul Newman and Karen Wells…
NEWMAN PLAYS MAXIMO, THE HERO
Newman fit the bill for filmmaker, Jed Cowley, who, throughout his childhood, had a secret hope that his dog could talk. Crowley says of “Dear Dog, I Love You:”
This awkward love story is about Dudley, a bored and communication-inhibited man in his mid 30s. One day, in the attempt to end his own life, he thinks he hears his white basset hound, Maximo, tell him he shouldn’t go through with it. Stunned and rejuvenated with a new and exciting purpose in life, Dudley tries to get his dog to talk again. But, he must go to uncomfortable lengths to accomplish this, namely, talking to a girl.
See for yourself why this project is so adorable, and why it deserves our support.
HELP BRING MAXIMO AND DUDLEY’S STORY TO LIFE

Please visit the “Dear Dog, I Love You” Kickstarter Campaign and contribute what you can – even if that means $2.
My favorite donation amount is $33. This is what I contributed, earning a “Thank You” credit in the finished film’s credits, a “Thanks, friend” video from one of the film’s characters, Brenden. (Cowley assures that you want Brenden’s approval), and a professional DVD, including special features with behind the scenes footage, once it has finished it’s festival circuit run.
PLEASE NOTE: On Kickstarter, a project only receives pledged donations if the ultimate goal is reached. Cowley has set a goal of $3000 and has until Tuesday, September 6th, 2011, to raise funding for sound designers, sound editors, composers, and other important post-production materials. Cowley set this lower limit to ensure reaching his goal but mentions, “We definitely need more than this, so even if we’re above our goal, please don’t hesitate to donate!”
Can’t donate money? Don’t underestimate the power of spreading the “Dear Dog, I Love You” word through blogs, tweets, facebook, or your choice of social media.
WHAT’S SO IMPORTANT ABOUT A LOVE COMEDY?
Jed says this of his project and plan:
Because of [Paul Newman's] amazing story, we think this is a great opportunity to draw attention to the animal rescue community. Once we finish our film, we hope to share it with shelters and the rescue community in hopes that some of the proceeds made from the film can help take care of dogs in need.
We who are savvy about rescue know all-too-well that public perception needs a significant shift. If we each offer a little help, this film can help to make that happen. I, for one, would love to see this project come to fruition.
COWLEY’S GOT STREET CRED
If the trailer above hasn’t already sold you, Cowley’s filmmaking successes include an award-winning commercial for the Utah Film Commission and a short film, The Loss of a Wrestling Match, an official selection at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Currently, he resides in New York City where he continues to be skeptical of dogs and their talking abilities while he pursues an MFA at Columbia University in film directing. Besides that, he’s a pretty likable guy with a terrific sense of humor.
Thanks for considering a donation!
