Ban the Bullfights – Be the Change
INNOCENCE LOST
Flying to Sevilla in 1985 with a pack of fellow 9th graders, the school system’s hope was to teach the Spanish language while immersing us in rich and colorful culture. We learned a new and colorful vocabulary all right, the locals were happy to give lessons, but it was not in the curriculum and we would not receive extra credit.
We also experienced a tradition that had young, rabble-rousing boys reveling in real-life bloody violence and girls upchucking their Chorizo. I’m not referring to our stealth acquisition of sangria. I’m referring to our first (and my last) bull fight.
Farm Sanctuary’s Walk for Farm Animals

This Fall, take a stand (and walk) to end the cruel and horrific practices of factory farming!
WALK FOR ANIMALS!
Farm Sanctuary’s Walk for Farm Animals raises vital funds for Farm Sanctuary’s life-saving work and brings together thousands of people to promote kindness towards animals. When you walk, you give hope to billions of farm animals who are suffering right now on factory farms. The Walk for Farm Animals is a positive way to speak out on behalf of animals who cannot speak for themselves and to make a real difference in their lives.
Bloggers: Claim Your Power

THE DILEMMA
Excited to participate in the PEDIGREE Adoption Drive on September 16th, I believed that a 20 pound bag of dog food donated for each blog post written during the campaign would reduce feeding costs for shelters nationwide. Sadly, once I posted my support for the campaign, a friend alerted me to this Consumer Affairs complaint page. What I read there was horrifying.
Mark Rasmussen, a Pedigree representative, responded to my concerns (read the full response here):
When we learn of an issue, we work with consumers to obtain information, request that samples of any product in question be submitted for testing at an independent facility, and perform a thorough review.
LOOKING DEEPER
While I have no way to substantiate the reports from Consumer Affairs or the outcome of Pedigree’s independent testing, I ran Pedigree’s ingredients through the K9Cuisine dog food rater. It fails. Grade: F. (Run Pedigree’s ingredients yourself to learn more.)
Georgia, a Dog Forever on Our Minds
Blog the Change for Animals is happening right here, right now. This event asks us to make a fresh personal commitment to the lives of animals in need and to inspire others to do the same.
My goal, by focusing on one old gal in particular, is to celebrate the capacity for love in adoptable senior dogs. Meet Georgia, a delightful mixed breed with a special gift for making people smile. Yes, dogs are typically notorious for this, but Georgia has always gone above and beyond, perhaps to reward those who have given her a second, third and even fourth chance.
Displaced by Hurricane Katrina, Georgia was rescued, transported from Georgia to New York and cared for by the dedicated volunteers at AnimaLovers.org. Her story is one of struggle, uncertainty, and a long journey to improved emotional and physical well being. It took a devoted team of people to help Georgia face difficult challenges over time. Only through their intervention and strong commitment did she eventually find her way into a loving home.
I invite you to follow Georgia’s full story starting Monday. You’ll hear first-hand throughout the week from Georgia’s biggest supporters as they talk about rescue, foster and adoption obstacles now overcome. From a collection of articles, photo essays and a video interview collected in previous weeks, you’ll see how Georgia has repaid each of her people in the best way possible, bringing smile after smile filled with love.
Please join us Monday and learn why adopting and elder dog is so very rewarding.
