Working Like a Dog
Here at This One Wild Life, I slave all the live-long day over a hot laptop. (Yes, editing video throws a lot of heat.) And what are my fancy-pants actors up to? They’re in the green room … leading a life of leisure in the lap of luxury.
This lazy lot had better not ask me for a pay raise. Angelina Jolie they are not.
Introducing Cats and Dogs
Here’s a terrific contest: FIDO Friendly wants advice about introducing cats and dogs. Just leave a comment and you could win a whole TON of stuff, including the publishing of your advice. Now, you have to respond in 150 words or less, but here’s the long version of my submission.
FIRST MEETING
My husband, Tim, and I introduced two 3-month-old kittens to our Newfoundland and crazy hound in the evening, after all their crazies were run out. The cat carriers had been left with the dogs throughout the day so the cat scent wasn’t entirely new, and the cats were made comfortable in their own room.
When we made the big reveal, Tim and I cuddled each cat in our arms, keeping the kittens safely above the dogs’ eager noses. The dogs were asked to sit and a good sit was rewarded with a quick sniff of this new and exciting “treat.” The dogs learned quickly that too much excitement would remove the treat from reach.
I Want My Cat Toy!
I am not speaking for the animals here. This is my want.
Have you ever found that perfect toy, the one that all the animals enjoy – including those of the human variety? Well, I’ve got one. The problem is, I can no longer find a replacement. The usual online outlets don’t list it and the company’s website, Pet Links Systems, is under construction. Essentially, I’m writing a review in reverse. My hope is that “If I write it, they will come… to me.”
I bought this cat scratcher to save my furniture and it truly has done its job. In fact, it should be paid overtime. I suspect the natural fibers have marinated in some badass cat nip for hours on end because, when I move it, the cats follow. Always. They even roll like fools where it used to be. AND, it matches my couch. But that’s not all…
The Morning (Toilet) Paper
This morning, my husband grumbled under his breath as he entered the bathroom. Another decimated roll of toilet paper lay strewn about the floor. “KITTEHS!”
Who could blame the cats really? That feathery white, loose end of the roll dances on the breeze of the open window, taunting our little cheetahs. I swear I’ve heard it calling them in a seductive whisper, “Here kitteh, kitteh, kitteh.” Really. The toilet paper is the culprit. My cats are innocent. You know toilet paper garners some pretty forceful power of suggestion when even the dogs are seduced.

BEST LAID PLANS
With the prospect of introducing a new cat into our household, we tried to prepare our family and home as best as any new parents could. We read about introducing cats to new environments, to dogs, to us, new food, a new schedule and to each other (in the event that we brought home two). We were prepared to acclimate the furry little beastie(s) to one room at a time. We fully expected that said beastie(s) might sit under the couch for a week. We thought, perhaps, having the little beastie(s) sleep on a towel and introducing that towel to the dogs could be a beneficial pre-introduction tool. Every aspect of this adjustment had a plan. We would be fully in control.
