FreshPet Select: Food Review / Photo Contest

FreshPet Select: Food Review / Photo Contest

Have you met FreshPet Select yet? Our family has, and we’re glad we did. Their aim is to offer fresh, balanced foods to make your pets happy and healthy. Delivering a cooler full of free, full-size meals to our door for review, they aimed to prove it. I’ll tell you now, this company hit the mark.

FreshPet Select Roasted Chicken Meal

Before I share the animals’ reactions, let me say how much I love this company’s philosophy.

Each full-time Freshpet employee is part owner because, “When something is yours you treat it differently.” They care for their company like they care for their pets. As the website says:

We started talking about what the ideal food for pets would be – what we would want to feed our pets. And the answer was simple: actual food – fresh, good food that’s cooked, not processed. Food, in short, you’d want to serve to living things you love, to members of your family.

Doing just that, I served our dogs, cats and the neighbor’s dog, Ezra, from the FreshPet cooler. Inside we found:

Slice and Serve chunky beef and chicken (with vegetable and rice) recipes
Roasted Meal of real chicken, carrots and spinach
Homestyle chicken in saucy goodness
Dog Joy treats in Real Beef and Chicken
Vital bison and beef
Deli Fresh turkey, vegetables and rice
and Dognation bones

With each serving, added to a regular diet rather than in place of it, we had cats climbing counters, dogs doing dances, and Ezra, my neighbor’s senior dog who won’t eat anything without coaxing, voluntarily showing “what good boys do” for a taste of this stuff. (There was one meal he didn’t want, but we attribute that to his lack of appetite, not the food.)

As a vegetarian, the more I was turned off by beefy meatiness, the more my animals went nuts for it. And then, when I opened the barbecue chicken treats, even I was nearly sold.

Fresh Pet for ShamusJed

Our household has been filled with happy animals since FreshPet arrived. And that makes me happy. The only thing that would make this food better is if we knew the farm buffalo, turkeys, cows and chickens inside were treated humanely.

Celebrate National Holistic Pet Day!

Celebrate National Holistic Pet Day!

Did you know that today, Tuesday, August 30th, is National Holistic Pet Day?

Say what? No really. And if you didn’t know that, you’re not alone. 90% of the more than 700 pet owners Halo, Purely for Pets natural pet food surveyed hadn’t either! And Halo wants to change that.

National Holistic Pet Day was founded by Colleen Paige of the Animal Miracle Foundation and Network to “celebrate and promote all the things we do (or should do) to take care of our pets’ bodies, minds and souls.” Today is also the perfect time to think about how we live within the context of our broader pet community. Halo plans to help Colleen lead the charge in raising awareness on this important day and throughout the year. And we’re completely on board!

Dog Days of Summer Giveaway: Ice Pups Dog Treats!

Dog Days of Summer Giveaway: Ice Pups Dog Treats!

The Honest Kitchen Ice PupsIt’s August. It’s HOT.
How are your dogs taking it?
Our black-backed, hairy Newf is often belly-up in front of the AC and non-stop panting. Our hound is a sun worshiper in need of constant hydration. We’ve just discovered a fun treat from The Honest Kitchen that cools our hot dogs off from the inside out … and we want to share it with you.

Ice Pups: They Make Your Dog Cool!

These puppies are super easy to make:

  • Pop the lid with a spoon handle.
  • Mix two heaping tablespoons of powder in a cup of warm water.
  • Stir, pour and , in the summertime, freeze.

This was supposed to be a demonstration video but, as you’ll soon see, it turned comedic in a hurry. I couldn’t feed the critters fast enough.

Ice Trays - Animal Rescue SiteSide note: I used cardboard bowls in a pinch, BUT, I just bought these paw-shaped ice cube trays from the Animal Rescue Site for our next batch of Ice Pups. Not only are they adorable for making bite-sized snacks, this purchase funds 14 bowls of food to rescues!

Ice Pups: They’re HOT!

Ice Pups can be served three different ways – for dogs AND for cats.

  • as a healthy sorbet – which we’re trying today
  • as a chilled, refreshing beverage
  • or, in the winter, as a warm broth after a rousing romp in the snow

Ice Pups: They’re Healthy!

Every food served from The Honest Kitchen keeps dogs and cats in good health. They holistically help pets in poor health too. Ice Pups’ tasty, natural ‘gravy’ increases palatability when transitioning your pet to a new diet. It bolsters drive for pets with a lowered appetite (especially during post-operative recovery). And, it aids those pets with kidney problems by increasing fluid intake. Check out the customer testimonials on their website comments section.

Ice Pups: They’re … Free? Yes! If you win…

Ice Pups are grain free, gluten free, contain free range poultry and you can get Ice Pups for Free right here!

I can’t wait to read about your dogs’ tricks and silliest behaviors.
Best of luck to you all!

I am a proud participant in The Honest Kitchen’s ally program. I joined because, after dangerous recalls and increased deception about what constitutes “healthy” food in the pet food industry, I finally found a human grade, socially and environmentally conscious dog and cat food company that I can trust my pets’ life with. While I do receive free food, samples and a discount through the program, I tell everybody I know about The Honest Kitchen because – bottom line – I want you to feel as good about what you feed your pets as I do.

Wags for Wellness Walk: Dogs Take Brooklyn Bridge

Wags for Wellness Walk: Dogs Take Brooklyn Bridge

Shamus PoolThe summer heat is a killer. Exercising our Newf is difficult with the constant threat of heat exhaustion. These days he mostly camps in front of the air conditioner and we’re sure to keep him well hydrated. We feed rehydrated food from The Honest Kitchen, keep large ceramic bowls filled with cool water, bring plenty of cool and clean drinking water when off to the lake for a swim, and watch for signs of distress. These details are important, not just for large woolly breeds, but for all dogs.

And folks are spreading the word…

Honest Ethics at The Honest Kitchen

Honest Ethics at The Honest Kitchen

When you enter the world of animal adoption, you quickly learn how multifaceted a topic it is. There are no-kill rescues, shelters that euthanize due to overpopulation, a desperate need for spay/neuter, and the need to educate about how not to fund puppy mills through animal purchases.

Then there’s the personal side…

When we first adopted our kittens, they were both quite sick with upper respiratory infections, ringworm, and Bartonella (or Cat Scratch Fever). We were pumping meds into them twice each day for 30 days, two months at a time. To give them the best fighting chance, I also wanted to fill their bellies with the best food.

I realized then that we had a fabulous opportunity to start them out right and keep them on track for life. They’ve since grown into beautifully healthy boys with zero health issues since. And since we pay equal attention to our dogs’ diets as a result, they too have been fabulously healthy and beautiful. We attribute this to human grade, hormone and antibiotic free pet food we feed from The Honest Kitchen, as well as other healthy food choices.
