We had wall-to-wall white Berber prior to hardwood and THAT was a nightmare. Sure, it was durable and came up clean every time we steamed, but inbetween it wasn't so nice. That's when we had two 12 year old dogs who slept on couches all day. With the new boys, change was most definitely necessary.

As for muddy floors vs. not having dogs, you're absolutely right. We'll take the mud. In fact, we installed the hardwood ourselves specifically for the dogs. Now that's love. Mopping is a close second.

Oh, I know this scene well. We don't even have a yard for Ayla to romp in but somehow she manages to bring back half the field with her when we come in from walks. We didn't really think through our cream-colored tile in the kitchen very well when it comes to Ayla. At least I know just how dirty the floor really is... ;o)

As for not mopping until August...I've definitely given it a thought. Vacuuming once a day is already bad enough. But would you give up your dogs in exchange for less cleaning? I'm certain the answer is no ;)
