Doesn’t Emmett look totally hip in his new, Vegas-style “Lucky” red collar and lead, complete with a mini version of Buckle-Down’s signature seatbelt buckle? All Right, Dogs. Lessons learned? Nope.
After posting about our frigid, 2-day dog search & rescue, which was frightfully taxing on both our dogs and on us, I received many comments assuming Shamus and Emmett must have learned a valuable lesson. For example, the well-meaning Karen Friesecke of DoggieStylish.com said:
After all that drama I’m sure that they will never stray from home again. Warm and safe at home with Mom and Dad is far more fun than alone and lost in the winter wilderness.
Karen’s sympathetic sentiment was echoed again and again by family and friends. I wish we could believe this were true, but it’s not.
Dogs, unlike humans, are so beautifully Zen-like that being “in the moment” is all they can do. With new proof-positive that my dogs have learned nothing, I share the following story because I do not recommend learning from experience.
Both Dogs: Lost … and Found
As the dogs bask quietly in the sun, it’s difficult to imagine how we survived the past two days. That we are together again is testament to a happy ending, but its fruition wasn’t always expected…
THE SNOW STAIR
The trouble started with several brutal storms while we vacationed in Mexico last week. Our house sitter called to say that, after 20 inches of snow, sleet and freezing rain, Shamus, our Newf, leveraged this new mantel to jump the fence. Thankfully, true to Newf form, Shamus appreciates companionship more than freedom. He came back immediately. We were lucky.
When our sitter shoveled snow from the point of exit, the problem appeared to be solved – until it wasn’t. Shamus found another weight-bearing point. The only solution, until we came home, was sentencing Shamus to doggy jail at the maximum security kennel – along with Emmett who would surely learn this new trick too.
Dog Business
I imagine this happening while we’re cruising around South America grabbing new footage for this site. (I’ve pre-scheduled this to post while we’re away.) Bless our house sitters’ hearts and let’s hope we still have a house to come home to.

The Weather Outside is Frightful
How many of you are traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday? It sounds like it might be a good week to hunker down and enjoy a warm fire. According to Accuweather.com:
Messy travel conditions due to brutal cold, snow and episodes of wind will remain a big concern in the West early in the week. Meanwhile, more rounds of rain and snow will also shift into the Plains and Great Lakes through much of Thanksgiving week.
Last week’s snowfall in New York’s Capital Region gave our household a practice run in snuggling. The animals have since geared up (down?) for the seasonal shift, settling in for their long winter nap. Our snoozing, cuddling cats and yawning, stretching dogs prove, once again, that naps can be an exciting adventure.
Wishing you woolly warmth this holiday week and always!
