Dog Days of Summer Giveaway: Ice Pups Dog Treats!
It’s August. It’s HOT.
How are your dogs taking it?
Our black-backed, hairy Newf is often belly-up in front of the AC and non-stop panting. Our hound is a sun worshiper in need of constant hydration. We’ve just discovered a fun treat from The Honest Kitchen that cools our hot dogs off from the inside out … and we want to share it with you.
Ice Pups: They Make Your Dog Cool!
These puppies are super easy to make:
- Pop the lid with a spoon handle.
- Mix two heaping tablespoons of powder in a cup of warm water.
- Stir, pour and , in the summertime, freeze.
This was supposed to be a demonstration video but, as you’ll soon see, it turned comedic in a hurry. I couldn’t feed the critters fast enough.
Our Favorite Dog Word: “Fudge!”
Remember this scene from A Christmas Story? Young Ralphie and his father bonding over a flat tire at the curb, the hub cap full of bolts sent soaring deep into the dark, Ralphie yelling “Fuuuuuudge!” … narrating the amendment, “Only I didn’t say fudge.”
My husband and I have had those “Fuuuuuudge!” moments with our dogs, especially when our Newfoundland, Shamus, and his sidekick hound, Emmett, eat “treats” that they shouldn’t.
We’ve actually had this conversation, word for word:
TIM (yelling from dog yard through window): You missing a yellow scrunchy?
KIM: Maybe. Why?
TIM (observing shovel of shit): Want it back?
And there it is. My first thought. “Fuuuuuudge!”
Dieting with my Dog: Book Trailer Shoot
Peggy Frezon, author of Dieting with my Dog: One Busy Life, Two Full Figures…and Unconditional Love (Hubble & Hattie), invited Shamus, Emmett and a slew of other dogs to be filmed for her book trailer this weekend. Dogs were asked to sit on or near the same scale that appears on the book’s cover. And let me tell you, that’s easier said than done.
Under direction of the author herself, with just 4 dogs in the room at this particular filming session, Lucy wouldn’t stay, Jester sat with his back to the camera, Shamus wouldn’t lay down, and Emmett crawled inch by inch after treats. Ironically, I’m fairly certain our dogs gained ten pounds from plenty of said treats, used as bribery for a good pose. And there were plenty of good poses too. Mostly, there was laughter.
All in all, this was a terrific time and unbelievably entertaining. Although we humans imposed a bit of performance anxiety, our dogs were natural superstars. See for yourself!
Dieting with my Dog: One Busy Life, Two Full Figures…and Unconditional Love (Hubble & Hattie) by Peggy Frezon is available for pre-order on Amazon.com (affiliate link) and will be released September 2011.

All Right, Dogs. Lessons learned? Nope.
After posting about our frigid, 2-day dog search & rescue, which was frightfully taxing on both our dogs and on us, I received many comments assuming Shamus and Emmett must have learned a valuable lesson. For example, the well-meaning Karen Friesecke of DoggieStylish.com said:
After all that drama I’m sure that they will never stray from home again. Warm and safe at home with Mom and Dad is far more fun than alone and lost in the winter wilderness.
Karen’s sympathetic sentiment was echoed again and again by family and friends. I wish we could believe this were true, but it’s not.
Dogs, unlike humans, are so beautifully Zen-like that being “in the moment” is all they can do. With new proof-positive that my dogs have learned nothing, I share the following story because I do not recommend learning from experience.
Both Dogs: Lost … and Found
As the dogs bask quietly in the sun, it’s difficult to imagine how we survived the past two days. That we are together again is testament to a happy ending, but its fruition wasn’t always expected…
THE SNOW STAIR
The trouble started with several brutal storms while we vacationed in Mexico last week. Our house sitter called to say that, after 20 inches of snow, sleet and freezing rain, Shamus, our Newf, leveraged this new mantel to jump the fence. Thankfully, true to Newf form, Shamus appreciates companionship more than freedom. He came back immediately. We were lucky.
When our sitter shoveled snow from the point of exit, the problem appeared to be solved – until it wasn’t. Shamus found another weight-bearing point. The only solution, until we came home, was sentencing Shamus to doggy jail at the maximum security kennel – along with Emmett who would surely learn this new trick too.

(I should mention, those crab apples are fermented.)

The Weather Outside is Frightful
How many of you are traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday? It sounds like it might be a good week to hunker down and enjoy a warm fire. According to Accuweather.com:
Messy travel conditions due to brutal cold, snow and episodes of wind will remain a big concern in the West early in the week. Meanwhile, more rounds of rain and snow will also shift into the Plains and Great Lakes through much of Thanksgiving week.
Last week’s snowfall in New York’s Capital Region gave our household a practice run in snuggling. The animals have since geared up (down?) for the seasonal shift, settling in for their long winter nap. Our snoozing, cuddling cats and yawning, stretching dogs prove, once again, that naps can be an exciting adventure.
Wishing you woolly warmth this holiday week and always!
