THE CRIME SCENE

Shamus (Newf) and Emmett (Hound)Accustomed to the freedom of a dog door, a luxury lost when our kittens moved in, the hound and Newf haven’t taken kindly to asking for yard privileges. Much prefering the self-serve option, they have taken matters into their own hands.

It began innocently enough. Emmett, our crafty hound, learned to open the screen from the sun porch to the dog yard. Teaching this trick to the Newf, each would let the other out for a playful romp.

As a result, we are now in lock down: all screens latched, windows barely cracked, and all doors leading to the “land of no return” are barricaded with a highly trained ottoman.

Honest Kitchen Logo The dogs have been eating their favorite food from The Honest Kitchen for a few months now. As the scent of wholesome, healthy stew wafts through the air, they sit patiently knowing that all good things come in time. If you haven’t seen our dogs’ reaction at meal time, check out “Honest Kitchen Dogs” on YouTube.

Bottom line? They couldn’t be happier and we couldn’t either. Knowing that our boys are eating free range, hormone and antibiotic free meat as close to raw as possible in this household, well, that’s a holistic approach we vegetarians can get behind.

The thing is, that’s not why I’m writing. My real reason for this post is to show you my cat’s reaction to the Honest Kitchen. It seems Jed, our youngest, is pretty happy with THK too. In fact, all he needs is the box for dinner!

So, what’s in your kitchen?

This morning, my husband and I debated whether the apples were hitting the ground early. Almost all have fallen from the dog yard tree.  Tim swears this is normal but I just checked my personal almanac – a video of our dogs picking the last of the apples in ’09. It was filmed on OCTOBER 5th.

Last I checked, we are smack dab in the middle of August, famous for the high heat and humidity known as the dog days of summer. On Friday’s drive home from the Jersey Shore where the average temperature was in the mid 90s, the digits dropped steadily as we neared Albany, NY. Upstate trees along the Taconic were yellowing. Some had gone so far as to turn RED! Don’t believe me? These pictures were taken in our front yard this morning.

We have 7 animals in this house and, as you can imagine, it’s a lot like The Waltons with rounds of “Goodnight John Boy” and “Good Morning, MaryEllen.” Unlike scripted television, we don’t always get the names right. Other times, it’s exactly like television. We make things up entirely. Here are a few examples:

Shamus: Bat-Dog NewfShamus, The Newfoundland

  • Shamu: Shamus lays on his back like a beached Orca
  • Bat Dog: Note the photo
  • Shameless: He theives?things he shouldn’t – like my credit card
  • Fuzzy Wumpas: He’s shedding
  • Vader: He breathes like Darth and rides in an all-black CRV called the Death Star

It’s June 25th, a day also known in the world of pet owners as “Take Your Dog to Work Day.” Working from home this year makes this task easy. My dogs are with me every day, or I’m with them. (It’s unclear who owns who in the household.) So, in the spirit of things, we mixed it up a bit by bringing work to the dogs.

Lewis, Clark and Seaman; Photo by Rod BurkertMy interest in breed history was recently piqued thanks to friends Rod and Amy Burkert of GoPetFriendly.com. In their cross-country travels to help folks plan pet-friendly trips, they stopped in St. Charles, MO. There they stumbled upon a statue of Lewis and Clark’s Newf and sent me this awesome picture.

This Newf must have been important to the Lewis and Clark story, so much so that he was commemorated in bronze. But how could this dog have impacted this famous journey in a significant way?

Well, I did a bit of digging …

According to the Journals of the Lewis Clark Expedition, the dog had been there from the very beginning:

Summer 1803, Lewis oversees construction of big keelboat in Pittsburgh, then takes it down Ohio River, picking up Clark and some recruits along the way. With Lewis is a Newfoundland dog, Seaman, he has purchased for 20 dollars.
