The Honest Kitchen: A Gift of Change for Senior Pets
GIVING THE GIFT OF GOOD HEALTH
Retaining good health has been a challenge in this household and is something we’ve grown to appreciate. This is strongly influencing our gift giving this holiday season – for people and for pets.
For this reason, The Honest Kitchen’s limited-edition, all-natural Holiday Treat Pack is gracing our favorite dog-loving friends’ cupboard.
THE QUEEN OF INSPIRATION
We had a special visitor recently, a lovely rescue dog named Quinn. Around these parts, we call her the Queen. You might recognize her eyes from the Be the Change for Animals logo. When founding BTC4animals, Amy and I chose Quinn as our mascot because her story embodied everything we wanted BTC to be about. Quinn is now a symbol of hope for abandoned pets everywhere and a celebration of local rescue.
Petland and Puppy Mills: Stop the Madness #btc4a
Puppy Mill. The term gets bandied about so often, I wonder, does the meaning get lost? Could you define one? Could you identify a dog who came from one? And did you know there are kitten mills too?
Puppy mills are large breeding facilities where dogs live in deplorable conditions, often without necessary food, water, or veterinary care. Melanie Kahn of the Humane Society of the United States says in the video below, “It’s a horribly sad experience.” These dogs often stand on wire mesh their whole lives, eat and drink from contaminated bowls, stand in their own feces, suffer from various injuries and infections, and they fear most everything.

Dog Days of Summer Giveaway: Ice Pups Dog Treats!
It’s August. It’s HOT.
How are your dogs taking it?
Our black-backed, hairy Newf is often belly-up in front of the AC and non-stop panting. Our hound is a sun worshiper in need of constant hydration. We’ve just discovered a fun treat from The Honest Kitchen that cools our hot dogs off from the inside out … and we want to share it with you.
Ice Pups: They Make Your Dog Cool!
These puppies are super easy to make:
- Pop the lid with a spoon handle.
- Mix two heaping tablespoons of powder in a cup of warm water.
- Stir, pour and , in the summertime, freeze.
This was supposed to be a demonstration video but, as you’ll soon see, it turned comedic in a hurry. I couldn’t feed the critters fast enough.
Wags for Wellness Walk: Dogs Take Brooklyn Bridge
The summer heat is a killer. Exercising our Newf is difficult with the constant threat of heat exhaustion. These days he mostly camps in front of the air conditioner and we’re sure to keep him well hydrated. We feed rehydrated food from The Honest Kitchen, keep large ceramic bowls filled with cool water, bring plenty of cool and clean drinking water when off to the lake for a swim, and watch for signs of distress. These details are important, not just for large woolly breeds, but for all dogs.
And folks are spreading the word…

Honest Ethics at The Honest Kitchen
RESCUE FROM THE OUTSIDE
When you enter the world of animal adoption, you quickly learn how multifaceted a topic it is. There are no-kill rescues, shelters that euthanize due to overpopulation, a desperate need for spay/neuter, and the need to educate about how not to fund puppy mills through animal purchases.
Then there’s the personal side…
RESCUE FROM THE INSIDE
When we first adopted our kittens, they were both quite sick with upper respiratory infections, ringworm, and Bartonella (or Cat Scratch Fever). We were pumping meds into them twice each day for 30 days, two months at a time. To give them the best fighting chance, I also wanted to fill their bellies with the best food.
I realized then that we had a fabulous opportunity to start them out right and keep them on track for life. They’ve since grown into beautifully healthy boys with zero health issues since. And since we pay equal attention to our dogs’ diets as a result, they too have been fabulously healthy and beautiful. We attribute this to human grade, hormone and antibiotic free pet food we feed from The Honest Kitchen, as well as other healthy food choices.
Healthy Valentine’s Day!
Having feared loss, injury or sickness after my dogs’ recent mis-adventures, what better way to celebrate their health and happiness this Valentine’s Day than with recipes Made out of Love from The Honest Kitchen? (And, because we love having you on our mis-adventures, see the sweet freebies at the bottom of this post – for you and your pet!)

THE HONEST KITCHEN
So, who is The Honest Kitchen? Their team prepares meals for your dog or cat using human-grade ingredients and the gentle method of dehydration to remove moisture, not nutrition. Just add water to make fresh daily stews and go! (Read their free e-Book, Feed Your Way to a Healthy Pet.)
An Honest Approach to Nutrition
AN HONEST-TO-GOODNESS BEST FRIEND
I’m happy to report that one of our recent rescues just claimed his new owner. At first site, Dog loved Owner and Owner loved Dog. Together, they drove off into a beautiful sunset of best friendship on a day that was overcast to anyone outside their new world.
AN HONEST ATTEMPT TO DO THE RIGHT THING
Under the influence of tail wags, face licks, and head pats, one thing was forgotten during Dog’s transfer to Owner – Dog’s doggy bag. When Owner called to gush about Dog’s good behavior, even when shopping for new food on the way home, Owner went on to say something like:
I bought [X brand] because it had the word “healthy” on the bag. I only want what’s best for Dog.
Cringe. Owner’s mentioned brand is far from best, known instead for it’s substandard meat meal, high percentage of fillers and animal testing.
Grateful for the opportunity, we talked to Owner about identifying quality meat sources vs. fillers. Still, the question remains. With highly researched marketing terms used to persuade trusting pet owners, how does one know what’s truly good as opposed to what simply appears to be good?
AN HONEST APPROACH TO NUTRITION
As thrilled as Owner is about Dog (and Dog about Owner), I am equally thrilled about a free e-Book just put out by The Honest Kitchen. Inside is plenty of information to help identify high quality food and to show the impact of food choice upon our pets.
According to Lucy Postins, companion animal nutritionist and founder of The Honest Kitchen:
Several of the top reasons that cats and dogs are taken to the vet, are often directly related to the foods they eat.
These include ear and urinary tract infections, food allergies and dental health issues. Learn more and get your hands on a handy ingredient guide – for free:

I’ll be offering this guide to adopters from now on, and I’m happy to provide it to you too. Happy learning!
DISCLOSURE
I am a proud participant in The Honest Kitchen’s ally program. I joined because, after dangerous recalls and increased deception about what constitutes “healthy” food in the pet food industry, I finally found a human grade, socially and environmentally conscious dog food company that I can trust my dogs’ life with. While I do receive samples and a discount through the program, I tell everybody I know about The Honest Kitchen because – bottom line – I want them to feel as good about what they feed their dogs as I do.
The Honest Kitchen Cat
The dogs have been eating their favorite food from The Honest Kitchen for a few months now. As the scent of wholesome, healthy stew wafts through the air, they sit patiently knowing that all good things come in time. If you haven’t seen our dogs’ reaction at meal time, check out “Honest Kitchen Dogs” on YouTube.
Bottom line? They couldn’t be happier and we couldn’t either. Knowing that our boys are eating free range, hormone and antibiotic free meat as close to raw as possible in this household, well, that’s a holistic approach we vegetarians can get behind.
The thing is, that’s not why I’m writing. My real reason for this post is to show you my cat’s reaction to the Honest Kitchen. It seems Jed, our youngest, is pretty happy with THK too. In fact, all he needs is the box for dinner!
So, what’s in your kitchen?
