For those of you who don’t know, a year ago I designed and collaborated with Amy Burkert to create Be the Change for Animals (, an online community helping domesticated and wild animals in need. This platform empowers you to spend just a few moments and never a cent taking action on behalf of weekly causes. Four times each year, our Blog the Change events draw bloggers and readers together for a conversational community exchange highlighting special people who lend their voices to animals and the animals themselves. has been a labor of love, and sometimes frustration when the burden of management and technology got the better of me, and even more love when a team of dedicated volunteers (some giving in to my begging) signed on to write posts, scout causes, manage our Facebook and Twitter communities, and to make BTC the best it can be. And then the people came…

I never imagined that our community would grow 11,000 strong in a year, drawing animal advocates from all over the world who believe that we must act responsibly, as stewards of the Earth, on behalf of all creatures who inhabit it. BTC4animals is now a tangible, lively force for good.

DogTime PettiesPlease nominate Be the Change for Animals to win the 2011 Petties Awards. Don’t do it for us. Do it for the animals at Best Friends Animal Society. If we are granted the $500 prize, that’s who will benefit directly, as will those animals who benefit from the good work our community does every single day.
